Kenosha County’s Medication Disposal Program now has a drop box site in Somers, the Division of Health is announcing.
The program offers residents the opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted, unused medication, for no charge. It has collected 10 tons of unused, unwanted and expired medication since 2009.
By disposing of medication properly, Kenosha County residents can help to prevent poisonings and overdoses, reduce the risk of illegal use of prescription medications and avoid contamination of groundwater and Lake Michigan.
“Disposing of unwanted medicine the right way makes your home safer, and is good for the environment,” said Cynthia Johnson, director of the Kenosha County Division of Health. “This program gives our residents a convenient opportunity to do that.”
Drop boxes are available at six locations across Kenosha County, some of which are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The new drop box site at the Somers Fire and Rescue Department in the Village/Town Hall, 7511 12th St., takes the place of a box that was relocated from the former Silver Lake Village Hall.

Items acceptable for deposit in the drop boxes include prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, ointments and creams, pet medications, sprays and liquids. If keeping medication in its original package, please cross out personal information or peel off the label. All medication should be enclosed in a sealed bag before it is placed in the drop box.
Unacceptable items include biohazardous materials, needles/sharps/syringes and illegal drugs.
